Before going any further, we want to clarify the difference between a soft and a hard reboot. While not requiring the removal of power from the vehicle’s central processing unit, a complete software reboot is sometimes called a “hard reboot.” 

While certain systems lose power after a complete vehicle reset, this is not true for all. Power should be completely cut off from the computers after a hard reset, much like a Smartphone when the battery is removed.

While the difference between a soft reset and a hard reset may be highly confusing when reading forum advice on restarting a Tesla, this blog post will serve to clarify the situation for this blog: Software (screens or whole car) soft reboot; hardware hard reboot (disconnect of the 12V battery).

  1. Restart The Tesla On Your Own

Do Not Overload Your Tesla With Unnecessary Items

Resetting The Scroll Bar

The main screen will reboot for up to ten seconds if you press and hold both scroll wheels on each side of the steering wheel. Range Estimates For Electric Automobiles

The EPA’s Multi-Cycle City/Highway Test Method is the gold standard for assessing the range of electric vehicles. This is done by leaving a fully charged car parked overnight at an EPA facility before driving it onto a dyno the following morning.

Several UDDS and HWFET cycles are performed on the electric vehicle until the battery is depleted and rendered inoperable. During testing, the dyno records the miles the EV drives to estimate its potential range.

The manufacturer’s charger is used to recharge the battery fully, and the automobile is then ready to be driven away. The charger is hooked up to a meter so that the total amount of power used while charging can be calculated, including any energy wasted due to the charger’s inefficiency. The EPA then calculates the vehicle’s efficiency in terms of its MPG equivalent (MPGe).

Typically, the range and efficiency of an electric car are overstated in the closed-environment test at room temperature and relatively modest speeds. For instance, the Model Y from Tesla has a range of 451 miles when subjected to the Multi-Cycle City/Highway Test Method, which is far more than the average driver can expect to experience. To more accurately reflect what drivers may anticipate, the EPA will adjust the preliminary range and efficiency values from the testing by a factor of 0.7. The Model Y has a range of 316 miles.


Range figures for electric vehicles are ultimately approximations, just as fuel economy rates for petrol vehicles are estimates. While the EPA and manufacturers do their best, they must promise that any driver will achieve the rated results. More spirited driving reduces efficiency and decreases range.


If the battery is fully charged, why does it seem to have a less range than expected?

The predicted range drops slightly over the first several months before leveling out.
